Google Nest Exhibitor Spotlight

26 Sep 2019

Our mission is to create Google Nest products that work beautifully together to help you stay informed, feel more comfortable and safe, keep an eye on home when you’re away, and be more connected to friends and family.

“Technology is only helpful when it can make the task its replacing easier, simpler and more efficient. That’s why at Nest we truly believe in making the helpful home, a home where the products you put into them, do more for you than you do for them.  Learning from you, adapting to your schedule and doing this in a personal and communal way, just like how we use our homes” says Paul Haynes, Google Nest Head of Industry Partnerships.

Talk us through your latest innovations

As the amount of smart devices in the home increases, so does the need for trust, especially when the smart products are integrated into and even learn from a way of life. We believe that smart home technology isn’t about controlling a house, it’s more thoughtful and delicate than that - it’s about offering the power and ability to do so to the user. Homes are deeply personal spaces. It’s essential that they - and their owners - get the respect they are due.

Nest products are centred around the user feeling comfortable and in control, and the responsibility and opportunity to maintain this falls on us, as well as those who do us the service of installing our products. Recent research from PWC found that 44% of UK respondents are looking for a trusted connected home installer to help them bring this technology into their homes.

You can now change the temperature of your home using your voice. Your thermostat can learn just how toasty you like it when you get in from a cold winter’s day. A smoke detector even has a light built into it, kindly guiding you to the fridge for a midnight snack as it sense’s motion.

The way homes are built is changing. And, as customers become increasingly aware of the benefits of smart home technology, from improving safety and security to energy efficiency, the opportunity to have it installed before they move in can be a compelling reason to buy. That’s why Google Nest is partnering with the Home Construction sector to create tailored solutions for every living space, and homes that are helpful from day one.

What makes your products/services stand out from the competition?

A house is the biggest purchase that most people will ever make. And Nest can help make that house feel like a home - safe, secure and comfortable, from day one.

Nest devices - and ultimately the user - benefits from a combination of the best of Google - hardware, software and AI - that’s unique to the company. Not only does this mean that every Nest device works beautifully by itself, but - when combined - they get even better. Powered by Google software (with the Assistant at the centre), Nest products come together to be radically helpful to you throughout your day whether you're at home, at work, or on-the-go.

Nest products are as beautiful to look at as they are to use. We created the Nest Learning Thermostat as people had programmable thermostats installed but their complicated interface simply meant they weren’t being used. We continue to take unloved items around the home and reimagine them into devices that are more helpful. However, we can’t re-imagine every device, so by creating an ecosystem of products that work together, and by bringing the Google Assistant in to the heart of the home, we are creating a more helpful home.

What projects have you been involved in that you are most proud of?

Since 2011, Nest customers have saved more than 38bn kWh of energy, or to put that into perspective, that is the same as:

  • Brewing 2.1 trillion cups of tea - enough to make all the tea in the UK for 30 years
  • Powering the UK for over 40 days
  • Charging a mobile phone for every person on Earth for the whole year
  • 96 million solar panels for a year

Unlike traditional thermostats, the Nest Thermostat learns from user behaviour, programming itself to create a weekly schedule. It gets to know the temperature you like when you’re at home. And turns itself down when you’re away. It even learns how your home warms up or how draughty it is, so it only uses the energy it needs.  Using that data and highlighting energy-efficient settings, it helps UK customers save up to 8.4% to 16.5% on energy each year.

What can visitors expect to see on your stand?

We will welcome visitors to our helpful home, a modern real living space, to engage with Google Nest products  and experience our products as consumers. Google Assistant commands will be integrated throughout the space, encouraging our visitors to discover Google Nest for themselves.

There will be an opportunity to find the answers to burning questions about our products, learn how they work individually and how they come together to create a helpful home.

Who do you hope to meet at UKCW 2019?

At UKCW 2019 we look forward to demonstrating the helpful home from Google Nest to the Home Construction industry. We look forward to talking to everyone who has an interest in the helpful home of the future.

What challenges does the industry face, and what can be done to counter them?

“Smart technology is now crossing the chasm from early adoption to the mainstream,” says Paul Haynes, Google Nest Head of Industry Partnerships. “Home builders are instrumental in this. It’s not about a gadget or a gimmick, these devices are assisting with energy saving, security and peace of mind.”

It is important that customers know and understand that home builders are embracing the future. The way homes are being built is changing, in the same way technology is constantly evolving, and connected living will become the expectation amongst consumers looking at purchasing new properties.  Buying a new home should always be an exciting time in your life and adding new technology that will surprise and delight new home buyers will reassure them that they’re making the right decision,  investing in the future, in a home that will keep them safe, secure and comfortable for years to come.

How do you see the construction industry evolving over the next decade?

Real choice goes beyond simple design considerations, into the fabric of the home. The smart home market in the UK is moving past the early-adopter stage to acceptance and demand. And as connected homes become more popular, awareness – and expectation– of these options will only continue to grow. With Nest, Home builders can now tailor solutions that truly appeal to customers – and answer their needs.

Nest products are not just for one room. They’re for the whole house –an ecosystem that helps home builders meet changing consumer expectations and create truly helpful homes. The future is coming. Let’s make sure it receives a warm welcome.
