FIND OUT HOW WOMEN ARE CHANGING THE UK’S CONSTRUCTION LANDSCAPE AT NAWIC’S EXHIBITION THE HALL OF FAME

FIND OUT HOW WOMEN ARE CHANGING THE UK’S CONSTRUCTION LANDSCAPE AT NAWIC’S EXHIBITION THE HALL OF FAME

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Midlands are showcasing this year’s Hall of Fame at UK Construction Week.

The Hall of Fame is an exhibition celebrating women in the construction industry. Our aim is to challenge gender-based barriers and acknowledge the remarkable contribution of women in our traditionally male-dominated field. The exhibition is not just a testament to the resilience and success of women in construction but also a clarion call for a more inclusive and adaptive industry.

Breaking the Stereotype: Construction is for Everyone

Construction is no longer a man’s industry. Technology has changed how we construct. Gone are the days where the industry was mostly reliant on-site work. Desk based roles are growing in both their popularity and importance, and everyone, regardless of gender, now has an opportunity to grow in the sector.

Even on-site, advanced tools and digital technology has made physical labour less strenuous and more precise, creating a new landscape where women can thrive in roles that previously seemed out of reach.

Embracing Physiological Differences: The Need for an Adaptive Industry

Let’s face the facts: men and women are equal but different. For women, our physiological state can have a great deal of influence on our professional lives. The winds of our careers are often shaped by our reproductive systems, including the monthly cycle, pregnancy, post-natal challenges, and menopause. If our industry truly wants to integrate women, it must evolve to accommodate these differences.

The current industry structure is rooted in a patriarchal mindset. For genuine change, this needs to shift towards one that recognises and accommodates the unique challenges women face. Awareness is a crucial first step, but applying this knowledge to create more supportive environments is essential for progress.

Redesigning the Workplace: A Call for Structural Change

Workplaces (and the construction industry is no exception) have historically been designed by men, for men. Traditionally, these environments catered to men who had few familial responsibilities or whose home lives were entirely separate from the demands of the workday. This design has created an industry where long hours and rigid schedules are the norm, conditions that often conflict with the responsibilities many women, particularly those with caregiving duties, carry outside of work.

The construction industry could benefit from rethinking the structure of work. Imagine shorter workdays, flexible hours, or remote working options becoming the standard.
By normalizing flexible work arrangements, the stigma associated with them would diminish. Everyone, regardless of gender, would be empowered to prioritize family and community without fear of being perceived as less committed to their jobs. This cultural shift could lead to higher employee satisfaction, lower turnover rates, and increased productivity. A diverse, flexible workplace wouldn’t be something to fight for; it would be the default setting, benefiting all and marginalizing none.

A Vision for the Future

The world is changing, and we must change with it. At the core of this lies a fundamental rethinking of how the industry operates to ensure it is inclusive for everyone.
The Hall of Fame is less of an exhibition and more a movement that is trying to redefine what it means to work in construction. By celebrating these pioneering women, NAWIC Midlands aims to inspire systemic change in the industry, ensuring that future generations of women, and others, in construction can build on a foundation of equality, respect, and opportunity.
